Onions: From Awesome To Outstanding!
In the culinary world, onions are the flavor-enhancing aromatic cherry-on-top of any well to do dish. They can be grilled, caramelized, pickled and even enjoyed raw. Onions come in many shapes, sizes, colors, flavors and intensities that make them one of the most versatile vegetables we love to put on everything.
This foundational part of soups, salads, breads, casseroles and more is grown underground with minimal difficulty. Because there are so many varieties, different onions flourish in different climates depending on the length of the day. Long-day onions like sweet Spanish onions grow better in the North when the summer days are long, while short-day onions like Georgia sweets do better in the South. Long day onions are planted in early spring and harvested mid- to late summer. Short day onions are planted in the fall and harvested in late spring.
With all the different types of onions out there, choosing the right one for your dish is easier said than done. See below for our breakdown on what onions are best for what!

One not-so guilty pleasure of any onion lover is the crispy, almost-burnt onions you get alongside whatever else you happen to be roasting. Onions change in texture from crunchy to soft when baked, with the heat releasing their awesome flavor in a way that only 20 minutes at 400º F can!
Isn’t everything better when it’s battered and fried? This is especially the case when it comes to onions! A savory batter crunches up on the outside while the onion inside softens and releases its flavor with a POW! Couple fried onion with the right sauce and you have got one heck of a treat!
While cutting them the right way might be a challenge if you haven’t done it before, grilled onions are worth the effort! Tossing some oiled and seasoned onions over a hot grill is a fast, easy and dish-free way to enjoy onions.
Caramelized onions is the amazing thing you get when you slowly cook onions in olive oil until they are richly browned. It is a simple but wonderful way to pull out the natural sweetness of the onions, caramelizing then naturally for an intense flavor. Caramelized onions are great for topping steaks, soups, tarts, flatbreads, burgers and even dips.
The onion flavor that we love so much is perfectly pulled through and brought to life in french onion soup. While this culinary creation might look intimidating, there isn’t much to it except making some french bread slices, caramelizing onion slices, adding beef broth, seasoning, baking on the cheese and enjoying!

We already know onion goes great with practically everything, but things get really serious once onions go from being on the side/topping to the main element of your dish! What makes stuffed onions fantastic is the seemingly never ending amount of stuffing options you can choose from. This idea is also great because you can cook in the oven or on the grill in some foil! From cheese and meatloaf to guacamole and rice, use your imagination when it comes to stuffing onions!
While onions are awesome on their own, there exists a simple way to make them even better! Perfect for tacos, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, salads and cheese boards, pickled onions are an easy and healthy way to add some extra pow to many different foods. Using just vinegar, some water and spices, you can make your own pickled onions in no time!
We love crossing the lines of sweet and savory, in which case any onion “pie” is a perfect example! This unique food idea is a refreshing change of pace as a side dish at any summer barbecue or cook-out. Similar to a tart or quiche, just mix onions and whatever else your heart desires into a pie tin and bake for a delicious side that comes as a slice!
When mixed with your favorite spices and comfort food ingredients like cheese, bacon and other sauces, a dip can steal the show! Not only does onion take other dips to the next level, it steals the show when prepared correctly! You can choose from garlic & onion dips, french onion dip, caramelized onion dip, greek yogurt onion dip and even cheesy bacon onion dip. It takes a bit of time and preparation, but whether it is served hot or cold onion dip is a delicacy.

Whether you call them pakodas, bhaji, pakora, vadai, onion cakes, or fritters, there is no doubt these fried/baked patties are bites of onion heaven! Fritters can be made crispy or more cake-like depending on your preference, but we suggest serving them with a rich and powerful sauce to compliment that peculiar onion flavor.
